Most (if not all) anime fan-games on BYOND (primarily Naruto, Bleach, and DBZ) involve using punching bag style training (aka p-bag, training log, etc) where you just stand there and spam a verb (or hold down a button) all day long to gain experience and levels to get stronger. Not in this game. Get that filthy nonsense out of your mind. In Shinobi Open Source, you will gain experience by using your jutsu (taijutsu will get you taijutsu experience, ninjutsu: ninjutsu experience, and so on). You will also gain the greatest bulk of experience by doing missions. These two methods will ensure a steady leveling progression for your characters. If you want a p-bag style training method in your game, then add it in yourself because this is an open source project. There are also consumable methods for increased experience gain, such as "EXP Scrolls" that will boost your gained experience with a multiplier. As far as in-game events go, increased experience gain may or may not be a thing for limited periods of time for all players, depending on the event (i.e. 2x EXP Weekends). Naturally, increased experience gain will be additive (so using an EXP Scroll on an EXP Weekend event will stack for some immense leveling progression).
The other aspect of gaining levels, is that it increases your maximum health and chakra. For every level gained, your maximum health and chakra will increase by a flat amount (respectively). Obviously, it'd be better to level all your jutsu equally to maximize your health/chakra as much as possible, but your chosen class most likely does not benefit from all 4 types of jutsu.
Q: Will killing NPCs and/or players reward me with experience?
A: Does murder give you experience in real life? No. HOW you murder is what gives you experience.
Q: So this game isn't PvP?
A: Although it doesn't outright promote PK'ing, it is possible. There are no special rewards for killing other players. Just satisfaction that you may or may not be better than them.
Q: What's stopping veteran players from trolling newbies and killing them constantly?
A: I would hope the village ANBU are strong enough to deter the average veteran from doing this; that and the fact that there's no special rewards for PK'ing. But if this is happening, I'd encourage contacting an admin in the game to stop the troll. I do not tolerate such toxic behavior, and I'd recommend any game owner and their staff have the same mentality about it. Everyone should be able to enjoy the game in their own way, free of toxic behavior.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. I'm not perfect, and openly take points of view from everyone. Whether or not I agree with you is another story, however.
